The communities of Lake Bonavista and Lake Bonavista Downs were developed in the early 1970s and are real estate jewels in Calgary. In a city where open water is rare, developers built two artificial lakes - Lake Bonavista and Lake Bonaventure - with recreational facilities around them. The proven success of these communities in both the initial and the resale markets paved the way for such developments as Sundance, Arbour Lake, Lake Chaparrel, etc. Lake Bonavista is located in Calgary's Southeast quadrant on the North side of Fish Creek Provincial Park and is bordered by the community of Lake Bonavista Downs, Anderson Road to the North, Macleod Trail to the west, and Canyon Meadows Drive to the South. The communities are primarily single family residential. However, with the Gateway South Centre recently opened, it is also home to many condominiums.

Lake Bonavista and Bonavista Downs are also close to Southland shopping Centre, Deerofoot Trail and the Anderson and Canyon Meadows LRT. Both public and separate schools are found in the area. The communities offer a very active community and recreation centre which houses two skating rinks, a gym, and a fitness studio. The community association also offers tennis and canoeing lessons, and skating rinks are available for lessons geared towards community youth. Soccer, hockey, basketball, yoga and fitness classes are also popular. Programs are financed, in part, by the bingos at the Community centre.
