| Lower Mount Royal Community Resources includes links to Maps, Transit Routes, Property info, Schools, Average Home Prices, and more. If you are Selling your home in Lower Mount Royal, please see our Calgary Home Market Evaluations page Being the closest to downtown, it is no wonder why Mount Royal has a high population of younger residents. Formally known as American Hill, due to the large number of Americans who settled here, Mount Royal is split into two: Upper and Lower. It rapidly developed between 1904 and 1914 and gained a reputation as an exclusive residential area. The titles that were placed on properties restricted development to single family dwellings. Lower Mount Royal homes were made of wood and stucco while brick and sandstone were used in Upper Mount Royal. Calgary's recent growth spurt explains the changes in residential and new commercial development. Many new condo developments are being built, and many older buildings are being renovated and upgraded into condos. As part of the “Beltline”, you can walk anywhere, including to the many bars, restaurants and shops Downtown has to offer. Head to the “Beltline” Fitness Centre for a dip in their indoor pool or enjoy their other facilities. Calgary Map. Lower Mount Royal Community Map to follow Use plus-minus arrows for street ZOOM.
