Mission’s community roots, and hence its name, derive from the settlement of the area by Roman Catholic French Canadians in the 1880s. Located just south of downtown and straddling 4th Street SW, the area was once the homestead property for the Our Lady of Peace Mission, the first in southern Alberta. While the community is still proud of its heritage with a historical park and several monuments, these days it’s more of a fantastic pedestrian area than a religious one.
The “Beltline” area – where Mission is located - has a high population density of generally younger residents, many of whom walk to work. The "Beltline" is popular due to its proximity to downtown as well as the many bars, restaurants, and shops located in the area. What makes Mission so special is the dining - most of the area’s entertainment is centered along 1st and 4th Streets and 17th Avenue. With more than 30 restaurants in the area, there are tasty menus from around the world.
The Community of Mission is next to the riverside pathway along the Elbow River and has plenty of green spaces and mature trees. The nearby Talisman Centre facility offers almost everything, including swimming, racquet sports, indoor track, and weights. The Beltline Fitness Centre also offers an indoor pool and fitness facilities.
